When it comes to your child’s health, vision care might not always be top of mind—but it should be! Healthy vision is essential for learning, development, and exploring the world around them. We believe that setting up good eye care habits early on helps kids see clearly and develop into their best selves. Let’s talk about why regular eye exams are so important for children and how you can help protect their vision for a lifetime.

Why Kids Need Regular Eye Exams

Children grow and change quickly, and so do their eyes. From the time they are born through their school years, regular comprehensive eye exams are essential for catching potential vision problems early. Here is why:

Visual Development & Learning

Good vision is crucial for learning. In fact, nearly 80% of what children learn comes through their eyes. If a child’s vision is blurry or they are having trouble focusing, it can affect their ability to read, pay attention in class, and perform well in sports or activities. Regular eye exams help detect issues like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, which can all impact learning and development if left untreated.

Early Detection of Eye Conditions

Children often don't realize that what they are experiencing isn’t normal vision, so they may not speak up about any problems they have. Comprehensive eye exams can identify eye conditions like strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and other developmental concerns that can affect vision if not addressed early on. Early detection is key to effective treatment and ensures that these issues don’t interfere with your child’s growth and confidence.

When Should Kids Get Eye Exams?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that children have their first eye exam around 6 months of age, another at age 3, and then again before starting school at around age 5 or 6. After that, kids should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years to keep up with any vision changes and ensure their eyes are healthy.

Tips for Parents: Supporting Your Child’s Vision Health

In addition to regular eye exams, there are things you can do at home to help support your child’s eye health:

1.Encourage Breaks from Screens

Kids are spending more time on digital devices than ever before. Encourage your child to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from the screen at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce digital eye strain and supports their visual comfort.

2.Promote Outdoor Play

Spending time outdoors not only keeps kids active but has also been shown to help reduce the risk of developing myopia (nearsightedness). Encourage outdoor play to help protect their eyes and overall health.

3.Watch for Warning Signs

Be on the lookout for signs that your child may be having trouble with their vision. Squinting, tilting their head, rubbing their eyes frequently, or complaining about headaches can all indicate a vision problem that needs to be checked by an optometrist.

4.Ensure They Have the Right Prescription

If your child wears glasses or contact lenses, make sure they have the correct prescription and that their lenses fit properly. Regular check-ups ensure that their prescription is up to date and that they are seeing as clearly as possible.
